QUINCY -- It's a bustling afternoon in the offices of Quincy Asian Resources, Inc. Staffers are making photocopies and answering phones. There is a muffled cacophony coming from a classroom where a "Survival English" course for elderly Chinese people is being taught.

QUINCY —Quincy rang in the Year of the Tiger with a message of harmony and a day-long festival of dancing, drumming, cooking and art.

The gym at North Quincy High School was packed with revelers on Sunday at the 22nd Annual Quincy Lunar New Year Festival, one of New England’s largest cultural celebrations.

QUINCY — Dragon dancing? Check. Taiko drumming? All set. Moon bounces? Of course.

All that and much more – from bubble tea to, for the first time, Irish step dancing – made Sunday’s August Moon Festival among the most diverse, well-attended and energetic in the event’s 22 years.

Hurricane Bill passed well to the east of Massachusetts, leaving revelers to brave not high winds and rain but heat and humidity. Still, whether they were dancing, eating or learning, the thousands who packed Hancock Street appeared happy to be there.

QUINCY — In the eyes of an empress, a lonely girl is revealed. Holding red and gold paper lanterns, her servants dance around her in an imperial garden as she sings of her loneliness.

This is the lament of an empress from the Tang Dynasty, which ruled China from 618 to 907. The Beijing Opera Dance School performed the scene in a song called “A Lonely Girl in the Moon” at Sunday’s 21st annual August Moon Festival in Quincy.
